How to Transform a Ho-Hum Sofa Table into the Centerpiece of Your Home

I’ve been looking for a way to add a dash of vintage/industrial feel to my living room, but not entirely change the looks of it. Although the design of the room is absolutely gorgeous, I can’t help but think that something is missing, which led me to the idea of adding a rather simple element to it. The entrance to my living room faces the back of my large sofa, so you’re welcomed by nothing exciting but a colourful canvas. Not exactly what I had in mind at first.

I searched for ideas online and I stumbled across a palette of amazing sofa tables in industrial, vintage and even traditional, classic style. OMG, the colours, the wood and the design of each and every one! I instantly found the place for a few of them that caught my eye the most, and now I was struggling with a difficulties to choose one. Luckily, I have a supportive husband, so we got a very stylish, industrial style console table made of iron metal and recycled wood with two small drawers for storing the knick-knacks. Now all that was left for me was to decorate it.

Sofa tables are generally small and they have only like 2 small drawers which you can use for storage. So starting from here, it’s more than obvious that sofa tables are to serve a decorative purpose, rather than being a ‘stand alone’ piece of furniture. They’re generally placed behind a sofa or in front of one, so they fit my needs perfectly. I came up with a few ideas on decorating the piece I bought.

The symmetrical, no-fail decorate method

A symmetrical pattern of decoration is always a good idea which almost never fails the rest of the interior design pattern. You just need to make sure you have two identical decorative elements, whether they are candle holders with scented candles, photo frames, of decorative figurines. I went with a few decorative books which I placed in the middle of the table, along with two candle holders in a similar colour as the decorative books. The colour pattern used here should always match the entire living room design as a whole in order to create a harmonious look.

The asymmetrical method

The asymmetrical method is also a good alternative and is preferred more by the type of people who don’t conform to order and patterns that much. The living room of these people is often without any specific or ordered layout, but surprisingly, it still looks amazing. You can easily go with my idea in the previous paragraph and just rearrange the items by placing the candle holders on the same side and the books on the opposite one.

Trays

Get to know the power of trays in interior décor – practical and stylish. The tray allows you to combine the two previously mentioned methods. It can be placed in the middle of the table while holding randomly chosen stuff placed on it without any significant order. For instance, you can put a woven bowl which will hold things like keys along with books you’re currently reading, or a small vase with some gentle flowers in it.

My aim with the sofa table was to break the monotonous view you get when you enter the living room, since it was visually killing the design of the room. However, you don’t really need a reason to use sofa tables, you can just make use of them for entirely decorative purposes.
