The Latest Fashion For Choosing Cushions

A room should never allow the eye to settle in one place. It should smile at you and create fantasy” – Juan Montoya

Everyone craves for a little change from time to time and the easiest way to wave monotony goodbye is by adding something small, but unique; something that will instantly grab the eye. And believe me, nothing can make an instant makeover like decorative throw pillows.

When it comes to interior design, I always stay true to Nate Berkus’ saying “Your home should tell the story of who you are, and be a collection of what you love”. So, don’t be afraid to express yourself, even if you are madly in love with bohemian style.

Bohemian cushions can truly make a world of difference and give your home the missing spark to a polished look. But how to choose the right ones? Are there any rules? How many cushions can one use?

One thing is for sure, even the most beautiful pattern can look cheap and dull if it is not properly matched with the rest of your home décor. So, let me share my little guide on how to make the right choice when it comes to buying cushions.

Be Brave And Layer Your Patterns

Being a big fan of bohemian cushions has urged me to learn more about layering different patterns. The secret is not to overdo it, yet to be able to create a room that stands out and speaks volumes about you as a free-spirited, wild and bold person. This is done by putting one pillow with simple or no patter and dark color for every two bright and playful ones. This way, you will manage to tone things down, while keeping the fun factor around.

Contrast In Texture Is Always A Smart Choice

Before I did my last home re-decoration, I consulted several interior designers and received the same answer – choose cushions with different texture as to bring more contrast to your space. For instance, if you have a leather sofa, add a touch of soft velvet or nubbly linen cushions. Embroidery, fringe and quilting can also create an interesting interplay of textures.

Consider Size

Mastering the throw pillow decoration means considering the size. The size of your decorative cushions must be determined by the size of your sofa/chair. The average cushion size (40 – 45cm) will work great for average size sofas, while the larger throw pillows (60cm) are compatible with larger sofas, creating a comfy lounge feel.

Examine The Throw Pillows For Quality

There’s nothing more annoying than a misshapen throw pillow. So, keep in mind that feather filled pillows have more squish, unlike foam and other synthetic fills, which are stiffer. However, the former are more pricey than the latter, so know your limit before jumping into making any decision.

Finally, when it comes to choosing decorative cushions, don’t be afraid to add a splash of colour. Be different and express your feelings. Add your personal style in your home, just make sure you stick to the main rule – balance. That’s the only way to create the always wanted “Wow” effect.
